Sensiks & Partners Combat Healthcare Worker Burnout

VR‑STRESS (Virtual Reality Simulations Triggering Responses Efficiently to Stressful Situations) is an Interreg-funded, €4.4 million cross-border innovation program uniting Dutch and Belgian scientists, hospitals and technology companies to address the healthcare worker burnout crisis, which impacts approximately 40% of professionals in the region.

WHY VR‑STRESS?

Emotional workload is the primary driver of healthcare worker attrition. VR‑STRESS develops a fully adaptive, biofeedback-driven training ecosystem so professionals can rehearse emotionally demanding scenarios and decompress safely afterward — without carrying residual stress into real patients' care.

Sensiks Role

Sensiks: Pioneering High-Tech Health for Stress Management

Sensiks contributes its unique Sensory Reality technology and expertise in bio-adaptive experiences, closing the loop between stress measurement and de‑stressing interventions.

Sensory Reality Pods

Controlled multi-sensory environments where healthcare workers can safely decompress after high-stress training scenarios.

  • Immersive audio‑visual scenes tuned for recovery.
  • Multi-sensory inputs (airflow, scent, temperature, vibration) designed for down‑regulation.
  • Biofeedback‑driven guidance based on stress markers.

Adaptive Experience Design

Creation of closed feedback loops between biometric stress monitoring and real‑time simulation adjustment.

  • Stress and recovery states continuously tracked.
  • Training intensity and de‑stress protocols adapted to the individual.
  • Prevention of overload while still building resilience capacity.

Multi-Sensory Integration

Enhancing training realism and effectiveness through full sensory engagement.

  • Linking VR scenarios to Sensory Reality cabin content.
  • Coordinated timing between stressful exposure and decompression.
  • Delivering "physiological landing zones" after intense simulations.

CRITICAL SAFETY FUNCTION

SENSIKS technology helps healthcare professionals train for emotionally demanding situations without carrying residual stress into their actual work environment — a safety layer that traditional VR training often overlooks.

Impact

Addressing a €600 Billion Mental Health Crisis

The European Union faces a significant mental health crisis with an annual economic cost estimated at over €600 billion. A considerable treatment gap exists, with surveys indicating that more than half of those experiencing a mental health issue may not receive professional help. This issue is compounded by high rates of burnout among healthcare professionals, with various studies confirming a serious and widespread mental health crisis across the healthcare workforce with 77% of European healthcare workers reporting burnout‑related issues,

  • Personalized stress resilience training using adaptive bio‑feedback to keep participants in an effective, non‑overwhelming training zone.
  • Prevention of emotional overload by pairing intense simulation with structured decompression in Sensory Reality pods.
  • Sustainable careers in healthcare by equipping professionals with real coping capacity rather than short‑term fixes.

Timeline

The VR‑STRESS project runs from September 2026 through August 2029, combining Sensiks' proprietary de‑stressing technology with cutting‑edge AI, physiological sensing, and photorealistic VR to create one of the first truly adaptive healthcare training systems.
